Lora is an 2 year old  female. She is a loving gentle girl that is good with dogs and children. No bigger than a pup. Stray and abandoned dogs in Croatia are often brutally treated and abused.  A life on the streets is a miserable existence with the danger of starvation, being run down by cars (frequently deliberately), violence at the hands of people or other dogs and and suffering due to disease and lack of treatment but the dog who is picked up and taken to the pound has only 60 days and then by Croatian law they must be killed. 

However, we are fortunate enough in this kill shelter to have a resident vet who is also the manager as part of our network of animal rescuers.  He tries to get the dogs adopted and extends their time to do so but if the local city hall should order him to kill those who have reached their 60 days in the pound the law can't be resisted. This law is not the only danger of death in this pound, overcrowding is sometimes the cause of death and injury due to fights.
The vet does his best with the limited resources available, local volunteers are recruited to come and walk the dogs on a Saturday afternoon. This is the only time of the week the dogs can leave the pens and there can be long periods when the walks are not possible and due to the ratio of dogs to volunteers some will not get exercised at all. These dogs have basic care but they suffer in the pound from stress, boredom, fear and sadness. They are all desperate to get out of their prison and be loved and part of a family.

JULIE - 2 YEAR OLD FEMALE DACHSHUND CROSS - UK

  

Julie, 2.5 yr Dachshund mix - wonderful girl looking for home

Julie fostered in the UK- Great loyalty in a small dog. Julie, like many others, just appeared. They left her, and she simply stayed where she was put. From day to day, she was managing the best she could with what she had in her surroundings. One person would give her food, but another would kick and punch her. Julie learned not to trust everyone. Volunteers found her accidentally, she was happy and playful, but cautious. After she realized there was no reason to fear her new friend however, she just threw herself on her back and waited for fusses.

Since she wasn’t close, we all were visiting her as much as possible, because we had no place to put her. With time, little black Julie got under the skin of one of the volunteers. She was asking people to drive her so she could visit Julie any time she could, bringing her food and taking ten ticks from her every time. Then one day she gave Julie a promise, she would take her in. As soon as the current foster dog goes, she’ll come back for Julie and care for her and love her until a forever home was found.

And what happened then? Well, Julie decided to disappear. No Julie. Nowhere. Winter was passing by and Julie still didn’t show up. Until one call; about a little black girl with four puppies from which two already disappeared. When we went to check on the mum with puppies Julie was there waiting with only one baby left alive who was so scared of humans he ran away the moment he saw us.



For such a long time we had no idea where Julie was, the volunteer had another dog in foster, and again, as usual and sadly, there was no other place to put Julie. But, luck was on Julie’s side, the foster dog was soon adopted and the foster carer kept the promise she had made so long ago .. Julie had a foster home and was safe and secure at last ! Sadly there was no sing again of her son but we hope and pray that he too has found safe sanctuary.




As for Julie, she’s sleeping in her foster bed. If her foster carer needs to do work on the laptop, Julie is right there sleeping by the chair. If she needs to go to another room, Julie is waiting in front of the door. Julie became a little shadow to the foster carer, because Julie believes in promises again. One was fulfilled, now it’s time for another one, the forever one with forever home.

LilyBelle - aged 2 years 4 months - female lab cross - in UK

 

This beautiful and cheeky girl is called Lilybelle. Lilybelle was on the streets of Croatia scavanging for every morsel of food and drop of water she could find. The streets are terrifying with dogs fighting for survival against each other, and humans trying to beat them, run them over in their cars and killing them in horrific ways. Lilybelle was caught and placed in a shelter however sadly for her this did not mean more hope. Within the shelter run by the town officials, food for scarce as was water, and there are so many dogs confined in small areas often very vicious fights break out and dogs still die. They are not cared for as a dog should be and also they have a death date placed on them so even if they survive the kennel life their time is limited.

Lilybelle was very lucky however, and was lucky enough to be sponsored to be brought to safety here in the UK, and into kennels. At first the impact of her ‘previous’ life was easy to see. She was underweight and bore some psychological scars .. however she showed a true fighting spirit and ability to trust and love again as she has come out of her shell and shown her potential as a kind and loving soul with just the right amount of playfulness and cheek. She loved to get into the paddock at the kennels and play, interacting with the volunteers and showing a new zest for life.



 Despite the fact that she was so happy in the kennels we all knew what she needed was a home, and she had her next lucky break when she found a lovely lady who agreed to foster her.

Lilybelle took well to a home environment although at first she was a little nervous of all the new things. Televisions, vacuum cleaners and washing machines were all things she showed confusion over, and the noises they made scared her at first. But being the brave soul she is she soon got used to them. What came across very clearly was her love for human company. She definitely showed her zest for life, confident and playful in the home and while out with her 'pack' but equally loving with a need for fusses and cuddles.

Lilybelle then found a forever home. She adores her family and they adore her however due to her breed, size and energy they are finding it too difficult to give her the excersise she needs. This is mainly because she struggles to cope on the leader pulling with over excitement .. but they are unable to let her off the leader as her recall is not progressing. While in foster she had other dogs in the pack and would follow them when out and come back with them.





We therefore feel that she needs to go to a home where there is at least one other dog that she can bond with. This will help with her recall training. She also needs to be somewhere more rural or with fields around and a large garden where she can be allowed to run safely and work off all her steam, plus be trained, away from any roads or other dangers.

Lilybelle does need work, she needs training and is high energy .. but the love this girl will give in return will make every second of work worth it. Could you be the special family that could give this girl the love and life she needs.

MILA - Croatia - 2 year old mixed breed female

 

This is the story of Mila in the words of one of her rescuers and carers.

Mila is a cuddly, colorful girl whose cheerful and happy temperament is in complete contrast with the not so happy life she had so far.  She appeared wandering the streets for the first time in early 2012 while she was in heat and was followed by many males. Soon after she appeared on the street she was spayed in order to prevent yet another unhappy bunch of helpless little souls. You can imagine how happy we all were when only few weeks later she got adopted. 

As time passed by however, Mila has been spending more and more time outside of her home, un-vaccinated and un-chipped, wandering the streets and neighbourhood yards.  Disapproval, and reports of her almost daily visits to yards in the neighbourhood became almost constant so a day came when she got reported to the veterinary organization to be caught and taken to a pound, along with her little friend Shmeezla, a Dachshund mix breed girl, even though they were just looking for attention and company and have never done any harm or damage to anyone. 

 

 

But that did not happen.  We have again taken Mila (and her little friend ) under our care and placed them in our shelter where she will wait for one of you to fall in love with her and finally take her to the real, warm and loving home this beauty certainly deserves . Until that day comes, Mila wants to be fully prepared for her new family.

ADOPTED - ANDROMEDA - UK - cat friendly and easy going

Andromeda is a "little star" That's what her foster carer says. Andromeda was rescued from the streets of Croatia and is now in a foster home in Lincolnshire.

She is between 2-3 years old and only 8kgs. She is enjoying the comforts of home for the first time in her life and would love a permanent home.

She is sociable with other dogs, although sometimes a bit cautious with bigger dogs.

CURA - Croatia - 7 year old female German Shepherd needs a home

Cura (Girl in English) is a female German Shepherd. She was abandoned in a cemetery last winter. She is very calm, not at all needy, she doesn't need much activity so she is perfect for people who share similar needs. She gets along with male and female dogs, no matter what size. Since she is older dog, it takes some short time for her to accept them, but after that she is very friendly. At the moment she shares her foster home with a female Belgian Shepherd, and before that she was with a lot of cats and another male German Shepherd. She walks perfectly on a leash and she is house trained. She is 7 years old, weighs around 30- 35kg depending on her activity level.  She is micro-chipped, fully vaccinated, and sterilized.

 Leiha was a stray who into a family's yard three years ago.  They couldn't find her owners so kept her; she was spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

FRIDA - FOSTERED IN ESSEX - 3 YR OLD GSD CROSS

Frida - a lovely German Shepherd cross who is fostered in Basildon, Essex.            

My foster mum can't understand why I haven't been snapped by an outdoor loving family who love long walks - I would be their ideal companion!   Let me tell you a little bit about me.  I'm a cross-breed (a common mongrel!) who was rescued from a cruel shelter in Craiova, Romania by Anca, an animal angel. 

I have been fostered in Essex for nearly a year now, with my foster mum and dad and their 2 teenagers.  I like teenagers, but find young children too loud.  I would like to live with a family where there is someone there for most of the day - I'm a bit of a chewer if left to my own devices, but normally only Mum's things. 

I also live with another dog, Rusty - we get on really well but am not fond of the cats, they're no fun if you can't chase them! 

When I first came here I tried to escape from the front and back door and even out of the window.  

Now I am settled and a bit older, I understand it is much more fun living inside and my days of trying to escape are more or less over - Mum still locks the doors when she goes out though...

CIOCIOLINA - 3 Year Old Lovely Girl Needs a Loving Home!!

 Ciociolina. She is around 3 years old, she has been on the streets all her life and she has had all kinds of experiences, both bad and good with people.

 

She is a little bit more reserved at first, so I would recommend her to a foster home or family who has more time and patience with her.

  
Never ever aggressive, just shy and needs a few days to adjust, to get used to new people. She is looking for human companion, is very happy to see us, likes to be cuddled.
